I have a Toy Fox Terrier, and I may need to travel across several states a few times this year. She is very distressed by being crated, but she will wear a seat belt harness and behave extraordinarily well in the car. Unfortunately, I do not drive. I don’t mind flying or taking the bus, but I would like to do whatever is best for her. I know there are a lot of restrictions on traveling with dogs, but I don’t know them. Any ideas?

    In any endeavor, practice makes perfect. Your angel of a dog could turn into a devil in transit if you embark on a lengthy trip without preparing properly. But with a little advance work, you can help your pup learn to take travel in stride.

    I think you should crate-train her, because that’s the only way you can travel with her(without driving, and if you’re taking a plane). Make the crate fun for her, so she isn’t so stressed. Put toys, food, and treats for her. Don’t make the crate a punishment, ever. Don’t force in there, either. Let her get used to it. It can also be a nice little place for her to go whenever she wants to be alone and away from everyone. Also, you could put her in there if you ever have to leave her(but never leave her in the crate for more than 8 hours).

    As for buses, I’m not sure what they do. Sorry =/

    On you can’t take her by bus.
    Traveling by plane you could take her in the cabin with you BUT she would have to remain in her travel carrier for the entire flight mind you most airlines have a 20lbs weight limit this includes the weight of the carrier.

    So you have two options get her used to being in a soft sided carrier to go in cabin with you if you fly or look in have her boarded, stay with a friend/relative.

    In my experience, car travel is by far the most agreeable to a dog. You can stop for stretches, potty breaks, whatever, whenever.

    Dogs are not allowed on Greyhound or MegaBus buses, unless they are certified service dogs. Dogs are not allowed on any Amtrak transport, with the exception of service animals.

    Air travel is generally safe for dogs; however, in order to make the experience as peaceful as possible, your dog needs practice in that kennel. She will have to be crated for the duration of the flight. Some airlines allow dogs under 20 pounds to be carried onto the plane, providing that the kennel fits under the seat. Other airlines fly pets as cargo only. This varies widely between airlines.

    To fly, your dog will have to be up to the minute with her vaccinations, and you will have to obtain a health certificate from your vet. It is extremely costly, as well, adding up to $300 to a round-trip ticket.

    Perhaps the most cost effective alternative for you would be to find an excellent boarding facility in your area, and have her attend a few “doggie daycare” sessions a month. That way, when you have to board her for several days while you travel, she will be accustomed to the facility and known by the employees.

    i travel with my dog few times state to state i didn’t drive my friends or my family droves. i hold and sit with my toy poodle less stress when travel with car but i never try to fly or taking bus i think its too much stress for little dog without owner’s comfort. even though traveling in the car is stressful for all the dog anyway. all the animal has feeling whether they are comfortable or uncomfortable same as humans. you can also find out and call to travel with pet information in airlines or bus line for example, if you are traveling by air there are few restrictions to follow you need to bring identification tag for pet, crate for your pet ( food and water), some vet papers but best way to find out is calling them for what you need to do. hope this help
